In an earlier post, “America: The Dream of Ages”, I wrote:
. . . America was something new and strange. It carried in its soul a set of new beliefs. It looked to a Creator and a Cause; it looked to Natural Laws that could not be abridged; it spoke of the Rights of Man. And by defining “Man” in ever widening arcs of searching Truth, the strength of these beliefs expanded through four-score years until “Man” began to encompass all that it should have all along. For truly there is but one race of us: The Human Race. And finally it composed itself of Men and Women both.
Fundamentally, for me, it is America to which belongs a particular heritage that has its roots deep in the historical Western European tradition. It proclaims as universal principles and inalienable rights aspects of Natural Law, including equality before the law, individual liberty, a respect for the rule of law, the freedoms of speech, the press, religion, assembly, and petition. Also, the other elements of governmental policy and structure enumerated in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States of America—including all its Amendments—the beliefs debated in the Federalist Papers. More, a traditional belief in the values of the Judeo-Christian Creator, and many other traditions, institutions, policies, and declared values, including capitalism, Federalism, private property, thrift, patriotism, courage, duty, and so forth. These belong to America as an ideology and not a nation. I include the American English language as a part of this heritage, because it has proved over time that it is an extremely powerful language, and that it is one of the most unifying factors of American Identity. Moreover, it is the only way to assure that any American can communicate with any other American at any time, including at times of national or individual emergency, and also access the written historical material, newspapers, media broadcasts, and other important sources for the propagation of the American Heritage over time.
The United States, on the other hand, is at this moment fighting for the values of multiculturalism, political correctness, relativity of values, the lowering of standards, reverse discrimination, the victim society, equality of results, and a lot of other characteristics of the Leftist Collectivists. These include communists, socialists, liberation-theologists, post-modernists, deconstructionists, nihilists, anarchists, structuralists, existentialists, critical theorists, new leftists, old leftists, and so on—all of the many philosophies that insult the past, debase the present, and could devastate the future. All of this is to say that the physical country, the United States, is growing away from America because of Political Correctness, Multiculturalism, Secular Progressivism, Identity Politics, and other products of Leftist ideologies. Moreover, the Leftists are helping the Islamofascists spread their dogma in the United States, in schools, organizations, through law suits and in other ways. Our enemies at home are faithful, not to the idea of America, but rather to the nation of the United States.
There are those, on the other hand, who are loyal to the ideal of America, and are extremely upset over the way the nation has changed over the years. It is they who treasure the American traditions, heritage, language, and values. Especially during the past fifty years, the United States has moved away from the basic, so-called “old-fashioned” beliefs of America. Many people are becoming aware of just how drastic this change is, and oppose it. They see that the need is to return to the core values and methods of our Founding documents, Capitalism, and the Judeo-Christian value structure. All of them recognize the fact that America is an idea and that its unique foundation brought special capabilities and an imperative philosophy with it.
This is not the same as saying that these people want to return to the conditions in the United States at some illusory “golden age”. It is not really a previous time of the United States that people long for; it is a return to the beliefs expressed by the Idea America that they want. In the past, for example, the Jim Crow Laws of the United States were obscene and un-American, but the American value of family in the minority communities was strong. It is the American values that some people long for, not the particular conditions in the United States at a given time. Strong, loving families belong to America; Jim Crow Laws, against the American values of equality, justice, and liberty, belong to the United States. And it was American values that drove individual Americans and others of all kinds to fight to change such segregation laws in the nation.
As I have posted before, up the California coast, near Monterey, there is a spot in the ocean where great underwater currents crash into each other and erupt skyward, breaching the surface of the water in a great tumultuous fury of movement and sound. I have taken this spot, Point Joe, as a metaphor for the cultural currents that crash into each other, erupting into our awareness to warn us of the existence of the major cultural warfare that threatens us.
Since Point Joes are about one side or other of Anti-Americans in the Ideological World War, the Left’s Main Stream Media and educational systems and politicians are numbered in the tens of millions and are doing what they can to downplay the terrorist Point Joes as well as the Point Joes that show we are in a Culture War against the Left. It is incredibly difficult for those on the side of America in this war to withstand the beating we are receiving from the other side. And there are tens of millions of Pro-American people who don’t know the “inside story” and aren’t receiving information about it, and are thus even more vulnerable to the pressure.
We need to fight the Cultural War to get the United States back to being America, and to fight the War on Terror to keep the United States of America alive.
