In an earlier post I argued that what is happening in Iraq is like an embassy-compound takeover by terrorists who want the buildings and land, where the police are fighting them to regain the compound, and that the Democrats are saying to pull the police away from the embassy. Senator Reid’s statement that we have “lost” in Iraq just adds emphasis to my criticism of the Democrats about this. Picture for a moment about one of the most vicious gangs in a city such as New York. Call them the Machets. Suppose they “take over” a connected group of neighborhoods, such as those that include the richest buildings and shops. They hold people in the area for hostage, and when the police enter the neighborhoods the Machets start a program of terrorism, and bomb and attack both the police and the ordinary citizens and shop keepers, and the children and their schools. The Machets split into Machs and the Chets, and they are also fighting each other, too.
One group of politicians, the ARES, want to keep fighting until the gang realizes that they are in a losing battle and move on to other areas to commit their crimes. The other political group, the DEES, wants to pull the police out and they say that if they do the violence and problem will turn to gang members who are also fighting each other for power. The DEES say that too many police and hostages are being killed.
The DEES succeed in pulling out the police. The people in the neighborhoods who had been helping the police are murdered by the gang members on both sides. The other people in the neighborhoods realize they are now helpless, and they turn to back the gang group they hope will win, so that at least they’ll be on the winning side. The gang members are still fighting each other, killing their Machs or Chets enemies, and also the neighborhood people who back the other “side” of the gang. Meanwhile, a huge, vicious gang from New Jersey, called the RANS, who have serious weaponry including fighting jets, jet bombers, massive artillery, and are working on a nuclear weapon, see their chance and they bribe and threaten and otherwise get one of the warring gangs, say the Machs, on their side and then they move in and take over, helping the Machs wipe out the Chets and also every civilian who fights them.
Now the RANS are super powerful in the area they now control, and they have all the assets of the stolen territory. And now, there is no hope about sending in the police, because the situation has totally changed. And now to stop the RANS from gaining more power, land, and assets, will require a lot more death and destruction, and spread into other areas of the Eastern Seaboard.
It’s just that crazy.
